Anyone can Learn to Paint

The truth is that everyone can develop the ability to paint. Learning to paint, is much like learning any other skill. Writing, talking, cooking, and similar activities, all require talent. Then, what differs those, who want to learn the basics of painting, from all the others, who are “god given” talents?

Many individuals believe that the only way to become a painter, is if you have an inborn ability, but you should not allow this fictional requirement, to keep you from learning to paint. As is the case with acquiring most skills, the secret to success, lies in the passion and determination of the individual.

There are many books dedicated to the subject of proper art techniques, containing information on how to choose the appropriate colors, paper, brushes, etc., and if painters were all experts, there would be no need for these reference books. It means the authors actually believe people are capable of it.

The painting method that you select, is a highly individualized choice. You can choose with oils, acrylics, water colors and pastels.  These are the basics, and you can always move into other ones at a later time.

You can actually paint with anything and everything including chalk, charcoal or even coffee. However, learning to paint implies you will try more than one technique, prior to deciding which one suits you best. You should not continue to practice with a method if you are unhappy with the results.  Instead, move on to another technique so that you can figure out which one will suit you.

You can also play with colors, mixing them and making the entire process more interesting for you. You don't have to read about the "color theory"; you can learn about it by playing around with mixing colors.

Whether your painting is naive or abstract, you should always be proud of your work and do not let yourself think that someone else's painting is better. You should never try to conform your painting to specific guideline, as art is a creative process without limitations. After all, if we impose rules and regulations on art, wouldn't it cease to be art?
